Open Studio: Pottery

Clay is a material with enormous possibilities and has been used for centuries to make everyday objects such as pots, tableware, tiles, and bricks. When clay is fired in a kiln, it transforms into ceramics, which come in three forms: porcelain, stoneware, and earthenware—depending on the purity of the clay and the firing temperature. Pottery is a well-known application of ceramics, found in many everyday items such as teacups, soup bowls, vases, and dishes. These rounded forms are created on the potter’s wheel, after which the pieces are fired in a ceramic kiln. Ceramics can be decorated and glazed after firing, and pottery is a craft that requires much practice but allows you to truly develop your own style.

Open Studio

The Open Studio Ceramics and Pottery is open to anyone with an X subscription who has completed a Ceramics or Pottery course, at any time when an assistant is present. All you need to do is register beforehand. The assistant is there to help when needed, to give tips and advice and to ensure that all materials and equipment are used responsibly and safely.

During the Open Studio you are welcome to use the potters’ wheels and other tools. Clay, glazes, clay slip, pigments and plaster are available for purchase.

The Open Studio is coordinated by assistants. Our assistants are volunteers. The Open Studio is only available when there are sufficient assistants. Therefore sometimes some of the studio’s will not be available during a weekend. Please have a look at the availability of other studio’s or sign up for our MAKE studio in which you can do DIY projects.
